For some reason, we were made to drift apart from each other
But, let us, us, us, not blame anything
Nothing in the world could ever tear us apart, we said
But, more and more, I become afraid that we may forever grow apart
.
I’ll borrow this music and tell you
People say the world has changed
Thankfully, between you and I, it’s still the same
Note: The above three lines are word-to-word the same as SUGA’s lines in BTS’ Life Goes On.
.
우리 인사하자 bye 아닌 hello Let’s greet each other, not with bye but with hello, Note: 인사 (pronounced insa) could be a greeting exchanged when people meet or part. The BTS version uses “annyeong,” which is an informal expression to say both hello and goodbye: “With ‘annyeong’ that I always say to start and finish the day.”
세상이 내 뜻대로 안된다 해도 even if the world does not evolve the way we want
Don’t forget the day we’ll meet again, after counting just a few more nights as we hope Note: Spring Day (How much longer should I wait and how many sleepless nights should I spend before I get to see you, before I get to meet you; If you wait a little bit, if you spend just a few sleepless nights, I’ll come to meet you, I’ll come to pick you up)
.
Time will pass
And someone will be forgotten
Things will flow however they like
.
Time, like a wave,
썰물처럼 밀려가겠지 will wash away like the ebb tide
But still, don’t forget to come find me
.
This moment when everyone has paused
The door that looks especially far away today
Life goes on
Life goes on
Life goes on
Life goes on
.
This moment when everyone has grown apart
The distance between us that is growing larger day by day
Life goes on
Life goes on
Life goes on
Life goes on
.
The trace I’ve left over the past 10 years
Even those countless wounds and glories
지나보니 추억의 한순간 are just a moment in the memories now that I look back
I fiercely lived through every moment as if there’s no tomorrow, but still, I’m afraid
.
I know I know 지금 이 자린 I know, I know, that this place where I’m now
금세 추억이 되어 버릴 자리 is one that will soon become a memory
Don’t be afraid, because until the end of my life,
끊임없이 삶은 계속될 테니까 life will continue to go on
.
Time will pass

SUGA sees this track as sharing some characteristics with two of his previous songs: So Far Away and Dear My Friend. Writing this song, he wondered if he would’ve suffered less if he’d had someone telling him the messages in this song. As someone who knows so well about tough times and suffering, he wishes a lot of junior artists listen to this song and find comfort. More generally, he dedicates this song to everyone in this world who survives on snoozes, sleeping in snippets and striving to fulfill their dream. (SUGA ‘D-DAY’ Live)

Behind you, growing a dream while watching me,
I’ll always be standing, so don’t worry too much
If you’re afraid of falling, I’ll gladly catch you NOTE: SUGA frequently refers to the concept of falling. Some examples: (1) “For we are flying together, I gain courage. I’m afraid of falling, but not of landing.” (Dicon, May 2018); (2) “I’ve seen many artists past their prime, unable to fill up big venues like they once used to and being ridiculed. Seeing them, from when I was young, I used to think that it may be a wise decision to quit when I have a say, rather than continuing while being mocked and criticized. Now, I just hope that I’ll be standing on the stage until the very last moment of landing. I think that’d be a successful descent. […] If it’s that I’m not falling all by myself but we’re landing together, I’m no longer afraid of the end. ” (YouQuiz, March 2021); (3) “That my leap would not be my fall, that your convictions, efforts, beliefs, and greeds are not ugly nor dirty” (SUGA’s Interlude); (4) “I’m afraid, I’m scared of flying high. No one told me how lonely it is here, that my leap can be my fall.” (Interlude: Shadow); (5) “We don’t need to worry. ‘Cause we when we fall, we know how to land.” (Permission to Dance).

The brutal yet beautiful good and evil, determined by numbers
When I fail to kill someone else, I become the one to die
Why do I have to kill someone, when this scene is not a boxing ring
Note: Polar Night (“Unconcerned about the fact and killing anyone not on the same side is what today’s justice is. Note: The above lines are almost directly from So Far Away. The second and third lines are slightly changed to signify SUGA’s hope that one’s dream will be generous and in full bloom eventually (e.g., So Far Away: “Dream will be generous to you wherever you stand” vs. Snooze: “Dream, I hope it to be generous to you wherever you stand”).

In ‘D-DAY’ Live, SUGA mentioned that he started writing this song as he was turning 30 (in Korean age), which reminded him of 서른 즈음에 (Around Thirty) by Kim Kwang-seok. He sampled and reconstructed the guitar instrumental of Around Thirty, upon which he built other layers. Kang Seung-won is the composer/lyricist of the original song.

Note: As in 사람 (People) in D-2, the wordplay used throughout this track is similar to the one used in Trivia 承: Love, RM’s solo track in LOVE YOURSELF : ANSWER. It’s based on the phonetic similarity of (1) 사람 (pronounced saram), a noun that means a person, and (2) 사랑 (pronounced sarang), a noun that means love. In an interview with Billboard, Agust D said: Originally, the title was “Sara (사라),” without the “M (ㅁ)” consonant in Korean — because that’s, like, one consonant less than the word “saram (사람),” which is Korean for “people.” Depending on whichever consonant you put at the end of the word sara (사라), it can become “saram (사람)” and “people,” or it can become “sarang 사랑,” or “love” in Korean. So, it’s the listener’s choice to put which consonant you want at the end of “sara” (사라). But I had my friend listen to this son and people heard it as “sal-ah (살아)” which kind of means “live” in Korean and I was like, “This is not going to work.” So, we finalized the title to be “People” in the end.

A kid who wasn’t loved enough
그래서 무엇보다 신중한 타입 made to grow into someone so cautious
For me, I want a serious and sincere relationship
You know, “forever” is a sandcastle
Even by gentle waves, it just collapses helplessly
Note: eight (the word forever is a sandcastle), Savage Love (Perhaps the word forever is a sandcastle; Even by gentle waves, it collapses helplessly)

Some thoughts on the repeated use of 그대 (pronounced geudae) and 그때 (pronounced geuddae): While it can be plainly translated as “you,” 그대 contains affection and romantic feelings and is normally used to refer to someone in a written/formal context (and is not used to verbally address someone). 그때 means “then” or “that time.” The alternating appearance of 그대 and 그때 in the lyrics suggests that when one reminisces about past love, it could be about the person they were in love with (or their past selves who were in love) or the time when they were in love.

Would it be you of the past that I’m missing
아니면 후회와 미련이 남는 그때일까 or would it be the past times that left regrets and lingering feelings behind
.
Somebody does love
But, I’m thinking ’bout you
Somebody does love
Somebody does love
But, I’m thinking ’bout you, you oh
I’m thinking ’bout you
.
Love is like that sunlight pouring down on a spring day
어느새 밀려와 버린 겨울 바다 거센 파도 and rolls in as the winter sea’s fierce waves, before we know it
Would it be the past times that we’re missing
아니면 추억 속에 묻어버린 그대일까 or would it be each other of the past that we buried in our memories
So I just try to smile without saying anything
미화된 그때를 회상하기엔 수고스럽기에 because it’s too much work to reminisce about the glamorized times of back then
Would it be the past times that we’re reminiscing about
아니면 추억 속에 웃고 있는 그대일까 or would it be each other of the past, smiling in those memories
.
Somebody does love
But, I’m thinking ’bout you
Somebody does love
Somebody does love
But, I’m thinking ’bout you, you oh
I’m thinking ’bout you

In Season 1 of BTS In the Soop, SUGA was seen reading a book titled “Almond,” a fiction about a boy born with his amygdala underdeveloped. The amygdala is an almond-shaped part of the brain that processes and triggers fear, anger, and anxiety.

The month I was born in
My mom’s heart surgery Note: Moving On (For the first time in my life in my mom’s womb, I used to count the days until my first moving; Vague memory, the cost of my moving was a machine in my mom’s heart and a big scar)
There have been all kinds of things
Why did it have to be so eventful
Even those memories I can’t really remember

And then the second best choices
차차 선들의 선택 선택 선택 yeah And then the second best to the second best choices, choices, choices, yeah
Note: Interlude : Shadow (Now I know that sometimes running away is the second best; Do you get it only now that always doing the best is the first best)
Things that I didn’t want to happen
Things that were out of my control

And the news of my father’s liver cancer I learned on a call during a schedule
I can only hope that my best choices were the right ones
Because they too have all passed
Would it be that all these pains are for me
The neverending trials failed to kill me, and once again I bloom a lotus flower Note: D-Day (Because the lotus bloom gloriously even in muddy water)
.
Oh oh

공수래공수거 그 말은 내게 해당 안 돼 헛수고 “Come empty-handed, leave empty-handed,” such a word doesn’t apply to me, cut your vain attempt Note: 공수래공수거 (空手來空手去) means one’s arrival to and departure from the world with empty hands, emphasizing there’s no need to be greedy for fame or wealth.

The word 해금 (pronounced haegeum) has multiple meanings. The two used in this song are: (1) a traditional Korean instrument (奚琴; a two-stringed vertical fiddle) that can be seen/heard prominently in the first 15 seconds of the clip above; (2) the lifting of a ban/prohibition (解禁).

이 노래는 해금 [haegeum] This song is a haegeum (1)
올라타 봐 지금 [jigeum] Get on it now
Bustling rhythm, maybe
이 또한 또 다른 해금 [haegeum] this would also be another haegeum (2)

해석들은 자유 [jayou] The freedom to interpret however one wants
개소리는 아웃 [out] Stupid nonsense should be ruled out
표현들의 자유 [jayou] The freedom to express whatever one wants
어쩌면 누군가의 죽음 사유 [sayou] Perhaps that becomes the reason for someone’s death
그것 또한 자유일런지 [illeonji] Should such freedom be allowed as freedom
당신의 판단과 추측엔 확실한 신념들이 있는지 [itneunji] Are there definite convictions behind your judgment and speculation
당신의 자유와 타인의 자유가 동일하다 믿는지 [mitneunji] Do you believe that your freedom is on the same level as others’

A flood of information prohibits the freedom of imagination and at the same time
사상의 통일성을 원해 wants to have our thoughts standardized
All those noises make our heads hurt, blind us,
이제는 생각의 자유조차 범해 and now violate the freedom of thought even
All those controversies cause confusion in judgment
또 쉴 틈 없이 생산되네 uh and ceaselessly get produced again, uh
What would it be that restricted us
Would it be possible that we did it ourselves

I’d die for real till the D-Day, but it’s gonna be okay
Time for some paycheck and I’m ridin’ downtown
Switch over, time tickin’ and over
.
Future’s gonna be okay
Okay okay look at the mirror and I see no pain
I’d die for real, I see karma gon’ be comin’ back for me
Time for some paycheck and I’m ridin’ downtown

.
D-Day’s coming, it’s a f****** good day
I feel as though it’s for this day that I’ve wandered in the maze all this time
어쩌면 어리숙했던 지난날은 이제 over The past days where I perhaps was naive and clumsy are over now
Once again, raise a glass to us who will be born again Note: Dionysus (An artist who reincarnated, whether I’m an idol or an artist doesn’t matter, cheers)
.
In this world already full of hatred, more loathing is especially unnecessary
Because the lotus bloom gloriously even in muddy water Note: Lotus flowers grow in muddy water, symbolizing rebirth, resilience, and purity.
Struggling to survive by comparing yourself to others, with an inferiority complex and self-hatred
At those, let’s aim a gun from today
.
What defines you? Break the limit, you idiot
Don’t regret the past or fear the future, you idiot
피할 수 없음 맞고 충분히 아프고 말길 yeah If you can’t avoid it, just fully suffer through it, yeah Note: Never Mind (If you think you’re gonna crash, accelerate even harder, you idiot)
괜히 상처를 헤집으면서 흉터를 키우질 말길 yeah Don’t rip up old wounds for nothing only to make your scars bigger, yeah

D-Day’s coming
As you’re freed from those forbidden things,
당신의 뉴 챕터를 열어 you open up your new chapter
To stay stagnant, we’re still too young Note: Never Mind (We’re too young to give up, you idiot)
The minimum effort to make today a better day than yesterday
.
What defines you? There’s no such thing as a limit, you idiot
What are you afraid of when the past has gone and the future is yet to come, you idiot
The past is just the past, the present is just the present,
미래는 미래일 뿐 과한 의미 부연 힘들어 십중팔구 the future is just the future — eight or nine out of ten, they’re given too much meaning
.
From today, we shall move past the maze and start a new beginning
In this world covered with hatred, the lotus flower shall bloom again
그래 D-Day’s coming 당당히 가슴을 펴길 yeah Yes, D-Day’s coming, I hope you confidently square your shoulders, yeah
증명은 당신 몫이니 부디 증명해 내길 yeah It’s up to you to prove it, so I truly hope you do, yeah Note: This line reminded me of his 2014 tweets where he said “Ever since I started music, I’ve never fooled around with it and I have no plan to do so going forward. To start music was not an easy thing for me. Trust and follow me. I’ll let you listen to better music as much as you want. I’ll prove and prove. Trust and follow me.” [full thread translation]
