(1) Dionysus was the god of fertility and wine, later considered a patron of the arts. He created wine and spread the art of viticulture. He had a dual nature; on one hand, he brought joy and divine ecstasy; or he would bring brutal and blinding rage, thus reflecting the dual nature of wine. (source: Greek Mythology) See version 4 photos.

(2) You will find “born again” and “born twice” throughout the lyrics. Dionysus is born twice: first from his mortal mother’s womb (technically from the charred remains of his mother) and then from Zeus’s thigh. It is said that he is born of fire and nursed by rain (after he’s born from Zeus’s thigh, he was taken to Silenus and the rain nymphs of Mount Nysa). He crosses the boundaries between humans and gods and between life and death, which is consistent with the whole theme of LOVE YOURSELF: (embracing) the coexistence of contrasting forces. (Source: Greek Gods and Goddesses)

(3) Wordplay: 예술 (yesul; art) and 술 (sul; alcohol).

.

Drink it up

술잔 (sippin’) 팔짱 (tippin’)
Glass (sippin’), crossed arms (tippin’)

한 입
One sip

티르소스 (grippin’) 포도 (eatin’)
Thyrsus (grippin’), grapes (eatin’)
A thyrsus is a wand of giant fennel covered with ivy vines and leaves, sometimes wound with taeniae and topped with a pine cone or by a bunch of vine-leaves and grapes or ivy-leaves and berries. Associated with Dionysus and his followers, it is a symbol of prosperity, fertility, hedonism, and pleasure/enjoyment in general.

Drink it up

분위기 (keep it) D style (rip it)
Atmosphere (keep it) D style (rip it)

한 입
One sip

여기 (kill it) let’s steal it
Here (kill it) let’s steal it

The illest

Just get drunk like Dionysus

A glass in one hand, a thyrsus in the other hand

In a transparent crystal glass, art that sloshes

Well, art is also alcohol, you get drunk when you drink it, fool
예술 (yesul; art) and 술 (sul; alcohol)

You dunno you dunno you dunno what to do with

Let me show you, I’m pushing forward with something completely different

A mic that is made of ivy vines and rough wood
(= thyrsus)

There is never a sound that comes out in just one breath
(= There is never a song that comes out easily without the pain of creating.)

해가 뜰 때까지 where the party at
Until the sun rises, where the party at

잠이 들 때까지 where the party at
Until we fall asleep, where the party at

Sing it 불러 다시
Sing it, sing it again

Drink it 마셔 다시
Drink it, drink it again

We are born twice

Drink it up (the pain of creating)

One sip (the scolding of the age)

Drink it up (the communication with myself)

(Okay now I’m ready to sho)
One sip (Okay now I’m ready to sho)

All drink, drink, drink, drink my glass, ay

All fall, fall, fall for a mad artist

한 잔 (one shot) 두 잔 (two shots)
One glass (one shot), two glasses (two shots)

Drunk in art, sing ongheya
옹헤야 (ong-he-ya) is a phrase in Korean folk music, particularly in songs that people sung while harvesting or doing other works. I’m leaving a link to a hip hop rendition of 옹헤야 in case you are interested.

All drink, drink, drink, drink my glass, ay

All fall, fall, fall for a mad artist

한 잔 (one shot) 두 잔 (two shots)
One glass (one shot), two glasses (two shots)

Striking a kkwaenggwari, sing ongheya
Kkwaenggwari is a Korean traditional instrument, used primarily in folk music. It serves a particularly important role in samulnori and pungmul, which originate from farmers’ music/performance to ensure and celebrate a good harvest.

여기 (kill it) let’s steal it
Here (kill it) let’s steal it

The illest

I’m at the door of the world now

The loud cheers I hear as I step onto the stage

Can’t you see my stacked broken thyrsus

It’s only now that I am born again

When the night comes mumble mumble mumble

When the night comes tumble tumble tumble

Filling the studio, low voice, low voice, low voice

Bass drum goes like 덤덤덤 [dum]
Bass drum goes like dum dum dum

해가 뜰 때까지 where the party at
Until the sun rises, where the party at

잠이 들 때까지 where the party at
Until we fall asleep, where the party at

Sing it 불러 다시
Sing it, sing it again

We are born twice

Wherever in the world we show up, stadium party ay

Born as a K-pop idol, an artist who reincarnated
(Born as an idol, then reborn as an artist)

An artist who reincarnated, an artist who reincarnated

Whether I’m an idol or an artist doesn’t matter, cheers

At this level, even art is like excessive drinking, excessive drinking, yeah
예술 (yesul; art) and 술 (sul; alcohol)

Breaking a new record is a race with myself, a race, yeah

Raise the glass of celebration, one shot

But I’m still thirsty

What

  1. Okay, so can “Born as a K-pop idol, an artist who reincarnated” be interpreted as the artist being reincarnated and born again as a k-pop idol?
I’m a bit confused as to what they were reborn as (from k-pop idol to artist or the other way around?) 😅
